Duck Quilt Blocks for Donald Duck Day

It is impossible to live so close to a Disney theme park and to have a cat named m. mouse and not recognize Donald Duck Day!

Donald Duck Day is March 13. I hear that Donald was born on Friday the 13th and that’s why he generally has such rotten luck. Donald is one of Disney’s first “bad boys.” His character was created to interact with Mickey Mouse, who had become a children’s role model. Donald represents many of those negative traits that a role model just can’t.

Maybe the fact that so many people can identify with his shortcomings keeps Donald Duck ranked among the three most popular cartoon characters of all time, making the list just under Mickey Mouse (#1) and Bugs Bunny (#2).

Did you ever notice that in all the Disney cartoons, Donald Duck only wears pants when he goes swimming? I don’t pretend to understand water fowl, but the duck makes me laugh and my family laugh, and has done so for many generations of others worldwide. It’s only fair he gets his own special day!

Incorporating Donald Duck into one of your quilts is easy if you do machine embroidery. Brother makes a lot of Disney embroidery design CDs so check at your local dealer or craft store.

Remember, Donald Duck is a licensed character. Be sure to read and understand the licensing agreement when you buy your embroidery CDs. Many of them state that the design cannot be stitched and sold. If you are giving your Donald Duck quilt away or keeping it for yourself, you should have no worries.

You can still find fabric with Disney characters on it, including some with just Donald Duck. If you don’t have any in your stash and can’t find it at your local fabric store, you may have to resort to an online auction to find some.

Again, pay attention to your licensing agreements even with fabric. Some forbid making and selling crafts with the licensed fabric. But if you are giving the quilted item as a gift, you should be completely within the realms of the law.

You know, you don’t have to have an image of Donald Duck on your quilt to make a Donald Duck quilt. Make sense? It will.

Use any quilt block pattern you love and use Donald Duck colors. Use the blue from his sailor shirt. Take the white from his feathers. Don’t forget the orange of his feet. His sailor suit also features bright yellow trim and a red bow tie.

Now there’s an idea. Use the bow tie quilt block pattern for your Donald Duck quilt! Make all the bow ties red and use the other colors from Donald’s attire to fill in the rest of the quilt block.

You could also make the Fishing Boats quilt block for your Donald Duck inspired quilt. Use blues for the boats and yellow, red or orange for sashing and cornerstones.

For added fun, why not quilt your project with a double-D design?  You might also use an outline of Donald’s feet for your quilt template.

The main idea is to have fun making your Donald Duck quilt, knowing it will be enjoyed after it is completed!

If you are inspired to create a quilt for Donald Duck Day this year, the single most important thing to do is to sign that quilt! Don’t forget to add the occasion and date to your signature, too. When you create a quilt for a fun occasion like Donald Duck Day, you want to be sure to commemorate it in every way possible – right down to that signature!
