Dear Quilting Friend,
Have you ever stood in a quilt or fabric shop staring at a stack of neatly folded fabric tied with a satin ribbon and wondered how you would use that beautiful fabric in a quilt?
Maybe instead of in a stack tied wtih a bow, the beautiful fabric pieces are lined up so you can see about 1/2 inch of each piece and carefully tucked inside a plastic bag.
Or possibly your quilt shop has a table top full of fabric skilfully folded and displayed so you can see hundreds of interesting patterns, designs and colors to all at the same time.
Years ago when shops first began offering these small pieces of fabric, the selection was fairly limited.
Employees cut the squares of fabric and folded them for display as they had extra time.
Quilters would buy them for scrap quilts or charm quilts, or because they loved the fabric and wanted a small piece of it, because they didn't really have a plan for the fabric and didn't want to invest in a whole yard of cloth.
And how many of us now have a collection of fat quarters and still have no idea what to do with them?
Or, how many of us drool over the fat quarters in the shop and would love to get some, but don't really want to just add them to our stash because we don't know much about how to use them in a quilt?
I'll admit to having a few fat quarters in my stash. They are nicely folded and stacked - just waiting for the right moment, or quilt.
My prize collection of fat quarters was gathered at the Houston Quilt Festival several years ago. Quilting daughter, Stephanie, helped with the selection. Although she wondered what I was going to do with them. Frankly, I wondered, too.
They are very cool Aboriginal dot art batiks.
I got the colors I liked out of a big pile of fabric. Random colors, various designs. You know - just the individual fabrics I liked.
It was my first purchase of fat quarters.
Oh, I had seen them in quilt shops, drooling over the beautiful display of colors; tempted by them all.
But for years I had resisted investing in any fat quarters. After all, if you like a fabric, why not just buy a full 1/2 yard, or more?
I remember standing there in front of the colorful display of beautiful Aboriginal art fat quarters, questioning whether I should even invest since I didn't know how to use fat quarters.
The problem was that there were no bolts of fabric. And since getting fat quarters was the only way I was going to have any of that fabulous fabric, I made the plunge.
But, as time marched on, I still didn't have any idea how to use fat quarters in a quilt, but my collection grew. The fat quarter stash in my sock drawer began. Then, the stash under the sweaters - - - - well, you get the idea.
But wait, before I go much further, some of you may not know exactly what a fat quarter is. So - - -
What Is a Fat Quarter, anyway?
When we buy a quarter yard of fabric off the bolt, it is cut from selvedge to selvedge. Seems pretty obvious.

Quarter yard, half yard and fat quarter
|
This means that we get a piece that is 9 inches wide by somewhere between 40 and 44 inches long, depending on the measurement of the fabric from selvedge to selvedge.
That long, narrow piece of fabric is great if you are making a border or sashing. But if you want to cut a bunch of squares or triangles from the fabric, you might not have enough fabric, simply because it is the wrong shape.
If you wash and dry the 1/4 yard, you are likely to have something less than 9 inches of usable fabric, especially if you just plop them into the washer and dryer like I do. Plus often the piece comes out all cockeyed, making it even more difficult to get much usable fabric.
Years ago, I stopped buying 1/4 yard pieces. The problem is that buying a 1/2 yard piece is, well, twice as much money; just enough to make me think twice or three times about whether to get the fabric.
Plus, you have to stand in line with stacks of bolts of fabric and get the nasty look from the gal cutting the fabric when you tell her that you want 1/4 yard of 12 different fabrics. (You know the look!)
It must have been a clever quilt shop owner who started cutting fabric as fat quarters - just to tempt us!
She took a 1/2 yard piece of fabric, cut from selvedge to selvedge. Then, she cut it in half on the straight grain of the fabric - through the center, on the fold.
This resulted in a rectangular piece of fabric measuring about 18 inches by approximately 20 inches – and meant that quilters could cut fairly large squares and triangles from the piece.
Then this brainy quilt shp owner carefully folded the piece into a small square, and called it a Fat Quarter.
Now fat quarters are everywhere. Some quilt shops cut their own, others get fat quarters from fabric manufacturers. Some fat quarters come as individual pieces of fabric, and others come bundled as shown in the picture above. Often the bundled ones are tied with a fun ribbon, making it extremely convenient to give as a gift.
But fat quarters don't have to come from a quilt shop. You can make your own to exchange with other quilters. Or, you can get the same shape of fabric from a large shirt, pair of pants or other garment you claim from a closet or thrift shop.
Expand Your Fabric Selection without Breaking the Bank
One of the great things about fat quarters is that you can get a bunch of them for just about nothing. Often quilt shops sell them for less than the equivalent yardage from the bolt.
Many quilt shops sell individual fat quarters, so you can choose a wide variety of fabric without spending a fortune.
Packets of fat quarters are often color coordinated, or combined as a line of fabric, so you know that all of the fabric will go perfectly in your quilt.
They look beautiful displayed in a quilt shop. And because it is so easy to get overwhelmed as you are choosing from thousands of bolts of fabric, using fat quarters can make fabric selection for a quilt much easier.
You are not limited by scale of print either. From solid or hand-dyed fabric to small prints, plaids or large scale prints, anything goes when you use fat quarters, and fabric shops usually carry a wide variety of fat quarters. Often you can find fabric that they no longer have on the bolt, which makes it even more fun.
The point is that for a tiny investment, you can have a bunch of fabric in a usable shape.
But the question still is - - -
How to Use Fat Quarters in a Quilt - - - ?
In our recent survey, 58.6% of you said that you were interested in learning how to make a quilt using fat quarters.
And with the crummy economy, quilters are getting back to the basics of quilting and using fabric wherever they can find it - including clothing from closets of family and friends (clothes they no longer wear, that is) or thrift shops.
And so, I set out to discover everything I could about using fat quarters in quilts.
And, boy, what a journey it was!
You would think that using fat quarters would be just like using other fabric. After all, it is just fabric.
As you may have already discovered, it turns out that using fat quarters in a quilt really isn't quite that simple. However once I worked with the fat quarters in making quilt, I discovered that it really just takes a few simple techniques to make it really easy.
Because I had a collection of fat quarters, I decided that I would challenge myself to design the center of a quilt using only the fat quarters from my stash. (I did allow myself additional fabric for borders and backing.)
And as a start, I chose to use the fun Aboriginal art fabric and whatever went with it.
That meant that the size of the quilt and block design needed to take into consideration the limitations of my collection - no running back to the quilt shop for more of the same fabric, no pulling regular fabric from my stash to "fill in the patches."
I wanted to choose a block that was interesting and a little bit challenging, but not so complicated that it would take an entire day to sew just one block together.
Because the prints in the fabric I chose have some interesting design elements in them, I wanted the patches to be large enough to show off the designs in the fabric, but not just be giant 6 inch squares inside a block.
Even with those few limitations, I discovered that designing a quilt top using fat quarters can present some significant challenges.
My biggest challenge was - - "Where to begin? Do you start with the block and add fabric or the fabric and find a block?
Once that question was answered, there were still more:
And those are just a few of the basic questions.
As I began to answer those questions for my quilt design, I realized that there are tons of quilters who have never designed a quilt.
And there are also quilters who have never drafted their own quilt block so they can make templates. Not all quilters have quilt design software. And, even if you do, maybe it doesn't do exactly what you want it to do. Or, if you are like me - maybe it does what I want it to do, but I don't know how to use the software for something other than the basic things.
Plus, once you know how many patches of each color you need for your quilt, how do you know whether you have enough fabric - before you start cutting?
The bottom line is that - what began as a complicated process turned into a demonstration making the whole thing easy. After all, quilters hundreds of years ago make their own templates and cut fabric from scraps of clothing, and they didn't have nearly the number of resources we have today. So - how hard could it really be?
But, I didn't stop there.
Once the blocks were finished, it was time to sew them together and finish the quilt top.
As I looked at the completed center, I decided that using the zigzag design of Seminole patchwork would add some interest, so I created a fun and easy-to-make border - even though it looks really complicated.
Once the quilt top was complete, I wanted to try out bamboo batting in the quilt.
That meant that it needed to be machine quilted. And with all of the tips and techniques gathered during the past couple of years, my adventure into machine quilting this fat quarter quilt on my home sewing machine was fun, and my family and friends are amazed at the results - just like yours will be.
Since making this quilt was so fun and easy, I wanted to share the techniques I used so your quilting can be more fun - and you can use all of those fat quarters you have stashed around your sewing area (or other places in your house).
Once Again, Video to the Rescue - 6 DVDs of Video Totaling
3 Hours, 58 minutes and 26 seconds, to be Exact
If you've ever looked at other quilting videos, they are just the same as quilting books!
A two minute clip showing how to organize your cut fabric patches. A three minute clip talking about how to machine quilt - maybe even a comment or two telling you that you may need to adjust the tension on your sewing machine. Maybe even a tip or two about closing the binding on your quilt. But nothing that shows you in detail how to do any of those things.
If you're lucky, the entire video is more than an hour - but most other quilting videos are about 45 minutes long. And what can you learn in 45 minutes? If you just needed to see a technique here, and some quick shortcut there, a 45 minute video might be great.
But, you can't learn to make an entire quilt, just by looking at a 45 minute video - even if you watched it 6 times! Because, you still are missing the answer to the "what do I do next?" question.
And in those other videos you don't get to see everything you need to do in order to complete the quilt. They assume that you already know most everything about how to make a quilt.
So they just tell you "Add the border" or "Machine quilt as desired." But, if you haven't ever made a pieced border or done any machine quilting other than straight lines, you'd be lost.
Not with this video! We take all of the guesswork and mystery out of what to do next, and show you exactly what each and every step is - from start to finish.
Here is a taste of what's in store for you in The Machine Quilted Fat Quarter Quilt DVD Mentor:

This Is Probably the BEST Video Instruction We Have!
It's not to surprising to hear someone say that, especially when they are trying to get you to part with your hard-earned cash.
After I finished editing the video and gathering all of the information together for the Bonus Gifts for The Machine Quilted Fat Quarter Quilt DVD Mentor, I started comparing it to some of the other resources available here at www.How-to-Quilt.com, especially our Highly Popular Machine Quilting Adventure.
And what I discovered amazed even me.
In The Machine Quilting Adventure, you learned lots about how to make a quilt. You learned about how to choose colors for your quilt, how to sew a 9 patch quilt block together, how to add simple borders, how to machine quilt using your home sewing machine, and how to add double fold bias binding.
And certainly those are techniques that every quilter will use for the entire time they quilt.
But, The Machine Quilted Fat Quarter Quilt DVD Mentor goes even further.
You get the benefit of all of the additional quilting resources I have gathered since then.
Heck, the video demonstration showing specifics about machine quilting on your home sewing machine is worth the investment by itself.
The video instruction includes specifically how to:
And that's just about machine quilting!
You get tons more information to help you make any quilt in your dreams - or in your stack of quilt ideas.
"That's all very nice," you say. But how do you know that this video instruction will work for you?
And that's great question. After all, there are dozens of people all over the internet today making the exact same claim. So, what makes me different?
Years after I learned how to quilt, quilting daughter, Stephanie, decided to take sewing classes from Barbara, a lady down the street. Barbara loved to make clothes, and wanted to share her craft with children, so about five of the neighborhood girls went to her house once a week and learned to make clothes.
The clothes were beautiful! And the girls had great fun. Barbara even staged fashion shows in her lovely back yard so these young ladies could show off their accomplishments to family and friends.
Then one day, it happened. Stephanie told Barbara that she wanted to learn how to make a quilt. Barbara panicked. She was an expert at making clothes, but knew nothing about how to sew a quilt. I knew that my daughter didn't want to learn how to make a quilt from me - she wanted Barbara to teach her.
So, Barbara and I hatched a plot.
During the day, when the girls were in school, I went to Barbara's house and taught her how to make a quilt. With my step-by-step, easy-to-understand approach, Barbara learned how to make a quilt with skill and ease.
This is the same approach I use in all of my video instruction.
This is just a taste of the feedback I have gotten from some of the quilters who have used my video instruction to learn how to make quilts:
I really loved your DVD, I have watched it through once and plan on going through it again. It is so nice to see things close up and get a clear explanation of the project. Gayle Leone, Salem, New Hampshire What I liked best about the DVD mentor is that you could WATCH Penny (over, and over, and over, sometimes..) and refer to the manual as needed. It has proven to be a great resource for me. Liz Pilon, Cheboygan, Michigan I have not had a chance to start a quilt yet but I did take the time to review the DVDs to see if I had made a good investment. After watching the DVDs I was eager and still am to start on a quilt by myself. I am new to quilting and have only made three with the help of the teacher working with me. The classes go rather fast and sometimes I am left with unanswered questions. With the way the DVDs are done, I am taken through the whole process as if someone is standing beside me showing me exactly what to do and answer my questions before I even ask. Creating these discs was a wonderful idea especially for a person as myself and others new to the quilter world. It will also continue to be of value to me as my experience increases for review. Thank You for your help. I now have a renewed spirit for quilting. I thought that the Robins nest DVDs are a great help to someone like myself who has never quilted before. I especially like the way you describe everything in such detail, and all the close ups are just wonderful, I watched all the DVD's and thought that I can do this, well not quite, but I have made a small cot size for my best friend Tiny (dog) and it came out quit well with only one mistake. Penny you have done a wonderful job on the DVD's and I would highly recommend for any would be quilter to have a look at the DVD's first. I have learnt a lot from them, without them I would not of started Quilting. Thank you so much for all you input, and keep up your good work. Kindest regards, Inge K., NSW, Australia Dear Penny. Hello everyone! I'm new to this great group - my name is Carol and I live in Austin, Texas. Penny's Robin's Nest DVD's finally put everything together for me - YAY!!! Before that, my mother in law tried to teach me :) Penny I can't begin to tell you how much I'm enjoying the set of DVD's to help me master the art of quilting. I've followed your instructions to the "T" and I think I'm finally getting the whole process. I bought another set of DVD's, when I didn't think my order went through with you, and I'm so disappointed with them. The two ladies seems confused and are giving totally different information from what I've gleaned in watching quilting shows on TV. They remind me of ME quilting, turning the fabric first one way and then the other and not seeming to know which end is up, literally. I just wanted to let you know how much help you're giving to me even though you're miles away. I love the "feel" of your video's as well, a homespun, bird in the background, what sounds like a dog slurping water, etc. It reminds me of being in a familiar home of a good friend, not an impersonal video teacher. I think everyone who's on the fence about ordering should do so. What I learned is well worth the price and in installments no less, what could be better. Here is a small sample of the things you will learn in
The Machine Quilted Fat Quarter Quilt DVD Mentor:
Unlock the mystery of how to decide which fat quarters to use in your quilt. Start with fabric and choose a block? Or start with a block and choose fabric? You'll see how I decided which fat quarters to use and what block to make. Once you see this process, your struggle will disappear and designing quilts using either fat quarters or yards of fabric will be easy.
See exactly how to cut patches out of a fat quarter so you get the most from the fabric. Without a little planning, cutting fat quarters can be a disaster, causing you to run out of fabric before all of your patches are cut. In The Fabulous Fat Quarter Quilt DVD Mentor, you'll get charts showing how to cut various patches from a fat quarter so you get the most patches of different shapes from that precious rectangle of fabric. You'll hear how to figure it out so you can get the most from your fabric on any quilt design. And you'll know how to tell how many fat quarters you need for the quilt you want to make.
Learn the secrets of beautiful machine quilting on your home sewing machine. For years, I was afraid to machine quilt a quilt anything larger than a baby quilt or wall hanging. Using a few almost unbelievably simple techniques, your machine quilting will be beautiful. The back of your quilt will be smooth - without puckers or pleats - and you will have the confidence to machine quilt designs other than straight lines or meandering (stipple stitching), creating even stitches as you machine quilt.
Remove the complexity of keeping track of where the patches go in each block and where the blocks go in your quilt as you sew everything together. It's frustrating enough to rip out stitches because they weren't straight, or the seam allowance got too narrow or too wide. But if you are anything like I am, you really hate to remove stitches and waste time because you sewed a patch or block in the wrong place. Using my tried and true methods, you'll never rip again because the patch or block is in the wrong place.
Square up your blocks so your sashing and cornerstones fit perfectly. I still don't know what my problem is, but no matter how careful I am, my blocks end up being slightly different sizes. You'll see how to trim your blocks to they are all exactly the same size, making it easy to add sashing - or just sew them together, if that is what you decide.
Add complicated borders beautifully and easily, impressing and amazing my friends with my quilting expertise. . The borders on this fat quarter quilt look like they are really difficult to make. But, using strip piecing techniques, they are easy, easy. You'll see how to make complicated-looking borders the easy way, and how to decide to finish the corners, and how to make sure your borders are exactly the right size and help "square up" your quilt top.
Layer and baste your quilt for machine quilting in less than 1/2 hour. I used to spend hours layering and basting quilts for either machine quilting or hand quilting. Not any more. Discover the secret to simple layering and basting, that not only makes it quick and easy, but ensures that all of the layers of your quilt are smooth and flat, and your machine quilting has no puckers or pleats. Using this secret weapon, you can layer and baste any size quilt in less than an hour - this one will take less than 1/2 hour!
Learn the easiest way to smooth the mitered corners on your binding so they lay flat - every time. The first few times I mitered a corner on my binding, it was all lumpy and weird. Once I figured out this simple method, my corners are perfect every time - even the small 1/4 inch corners. Once you see this technique, your corners will be perfect and your quilt will look like a professional finished it. Easy, No fuss. No lumps. Plus, you'll learn how to add batting to your binding to get a "stuffed" look that quilt judges love!
Create your own templates easily and quickly - for any block you want to make. Professional and experienced quilters make their own templates. That way, they get the right size block, the exact design they want, saving time and money. Years ago I learned some very simple techniques to making quilt block templates that are perfect for cutting the right size patches. Once you see how easy this is, you'll probably never buy a quilt pattern again. Just think how much money you'll save on patterns, so you can buy fabric.
What’s the cost to put Me on Your Quilting Team?
By now you can see how valuable The Machine Quilted Fat Quarter Quilt DVD Mentor is for making any quilt - whether you use fat quarters or yardage off the bolt, and you may be wondering about the cost of this amazing resource.
Well, put it this way.
If you hired me to consult with you to cover all of the points of using fat quarters in your quilts, it would probably take 7-10 hours. And that's if I boil it all down and cover only the critical points, and not all of the little details. Currently folks are paying me $198 per hour for consulting, that would set you back about $1,980 – and that doesn’t count travel or telephone expenses. Plus at the end of that time, your head would be spinning, your notes would be flying, you would just have pieces of paper to refer to, and maybe still not all of your questions would be answered.
When you invest in this package, you get the DVDs you can look at whenever you want, and as many times as you want, showing you every single detail of how to make this Machine Quilted Fat Quarter Quilt.
Or you could spend $60-$70 for some quilting books, plus $20-$30 each for some books with tips about how to make a quilt using fat quarters and how to machine quilt using your home sewing machine and then try to figure it all out yourself. But, then, we've already tried that, haven't we? And those books still didn't tell me what I needed to know - - - Plus some of the techniques I share in The Machine Quilted Fat Quarter Quilt DVD Mentor are ones I haven't even seen in books, let alone all in one place.
Remember, though, it’s taken me more than 28 years of making all different kinds of quilts, plus an investment of thousands of dollars to sort through all of the clutter of information and give you only the best. And I know you want to get to the heart of making quilts using fat quarters and finishing your quilt with beautiful machine quilting, and bypass all of that torture and unnecessary expense.
Maybe you have already made a bunch of quilts using fat quarters, and think you have seen everything already and can figure it out yourself. Maybe, but if you are anything like I am, every time I pick up a quilting book or magazine, I learn something new from just one little article or picture. Just imagine what you could learn from more than 3 hours of live quilting on DVD plus all of the bonus reports and samples of my quilt design work.
Every quilter has unique shortcuts and techniques that she has developed over time. The big difference is that I am happy to share mine! (Not all quilters are.) And because I am sewing exactly the way I sew when the camera is off, you get every inside tip and technique I have. Plus, when I make a mistake (as all quilters do when they sew), you see how I fix it - preventing you from making the same mistake as you create your family heirloom quilt.
Isn’t your time worth something?
This DVD covers the basics of what you would get in a personal consultation for a mere fraction of the investment.
And, you can look back at each and every clip in the video whenever you want to and how ever many times you need to – without feeling stupid or embarrassed for reviewing it eleven times. (You can even watch in your jammies or sweats or while the kids or grandkids [or hubbie] are taking a nap!)
Just think of how many hours you would spend pawing through books looking at instructions about how to make a quilt using fat quarters, reading them and then trying to figure out exactly what they are telling you, so you can try it yourself.
If you are anything like I am, once you have read everything and think you know what you are supposed to do, there are still some surprises along the way. But, when you watch someone actually do something, each step becomes clear and the surprise is only at the end when it all works out the way it is supposed to.
Sometimes when we explore something new, we don't even know all of the questions to ask. As a result, we miss some valuable tips and techniques that would make our quilting easier and more fun.
And I will readily admit that often when I hear a quilter share a technique I'm either confused with the description or a little scared to try it - without seeing how to do it and how it will turn out.
The Machine Quilted Fat Quarter Quilt DVD Mentor walks you through everything, step-by-step, showing you exactly how to do each process from start to finish, so you can see how it works. Plus I tell you what to watch out for - what is critical and what can slide. That way, you know where to spend your time to make your quilt perfect.
In this economy, sometimes it's a little more difficult to justify investing in a quilting resource. Believe me, I am being a little more choosy about where I invest my hard earned money, too. Before every purchase, I carefully consider what I am going to get to be sure that I am getting great value for my investment and that any resource will give me the information and skills I need for years to come.
I can assure you that I thought about this as I put the information together for The Machine Quilted Fat Quarter Quilt DVD Mentor. I wanted to create a resource that you can rely on for making any quilt in your future. So, you get techniques that will work not only on a fat quarter quilt, but on any other quilt you choose to make.
In essence, you get great quilting information enabling you to design and make gorgeous family heirloom quilts AND you get the added information you need in order to use fat quarters to make this quilt.
The bottom line is that, using the resources in The Fabulous Fat Quarter Quilt DVD Mentor, you will be able to:

This video information is amazing, and you will learn tons from just watching it. But, as I developed the information to share, I realized that there were examples and templates that you would benefit from - whether you are a beginner quilter or a quilter with more experience.
So, I decided to include these with your investment.
