Greetings Quilter,
Quilting daughter, Stephanie, is getting married, and I would imagine that babies aren't far behind.
After all, she'll be almost 30 when she says "I do."
She and her beau, Cam, are doing some traveling, saving money for a house, securing their careers, and planning for their future, which includes babies (or so I'm told!).
I can hardly wait to start making baby quilts for a new baby in my family! I've made scores of them for other people's babies, and a few for my two, but that was ages ago.
My quilting journey began with my ex-mother-in-law offering to buy a baby quilt for me – when I found one I wanted for my baby, Stephanie.
I never found that quilt, but found a pattern and made a quilt.
It was a twin size quilt with appliqué barnyard animals hanging around a barn. It was quite a project and began my love for quilts and quilt making.
But, I wouldn’t call it a baby quilt, even though it had baby animals on it.

| Although this isn't the favorite flannel baby quilt, you will see that baby quilting daughter, Stephanie, loved her quilts! |
My first real baby quilt was given to Stephanie and me by a friend of my mom.
It was a small flannel baby quilt.
When I opened the gift at the baby shower, I was appropriately appreciative and thankful. But I didn’t really understand what a treasure that simple quilt was until after I began using it with Stephanie.
It was around 40 inches square. The flannel top had simple squares sewn together – not even a 9 patch, just 4 inch squares of lavender and white fabric.
The back was a piece of solid lavender fabric and it wrapped around to the front as a self-bound quilt. It was tied with simple embroidery threads. And it had just two layers – the top and the backing.
Simple. Made to use. And very useful.
We all know how much babies love to be wrapped in a quilt. This little flannel quilt was the perfect size to wrap her in – either to keep her warm or to keep her secure.
When Stephanie was awake and happy, I would place the quilt on the floor with her on top, surrounded by toys, her animals (beagle dog, Cruiser and Siamese kitty, Minnie), and me.
As she grew, she found other uses for it – a blanket to cover Minnie when she was sound asleep; a doll blanket; a pillow for a short nap at pre-school; and it might have even done a stint as a Ghostbusters cape (that was before engineering son, Bubba, got the official Ghostbusters outfit when he was 4).
And eventually it was tucked away for “keeps.”
And with all of that use, came many accidents and requirements for washing.
It had food dropped on it. Cat and dog hair somehow found its way onto both sides of the quilt. Dirt from camping trips was easily deposited during those weekend outings. Even chlorine-tainted water from hanging around the ‘cuzzi (as Stephanie called our Jacuzzi) got splashed on that little flannel quilt.
Except for Stephanie dragging the quilt around the house with her thumb stuck in her mouth – like Linus – that quilt experienced everything most small children do with quilts.
The impressive thing about that quilt is – that it survived as a well-loved and well-used quilt.
That delightful little flannel baby quilt is probably still around in a box somewhere. And maybe she will find it years from now.
But I want to make a quilt that Stephanie will remember as “the useful baby quilt her mom made.”
Oh, I’m certain that there will be plenty of less practical quilts made for her children, but she needs at least one that she can use with a baby and not worry about what happens to it or how many times it gets washed.

An Easy-to-Make Baby Quilt - - -
And Maybe Even Somewhat Practical!
Because baby quilts are so fun to give and use, and they can be easy to make, they make a perfect project for a beginner quilter who has easy-to-understand quilting instructions.
![]() |
| You can create this cuddly flannel baby quilt in less than a day! |
Of course, the main component of the quilt is the flannel – soft, cuddly flannel that imparts a loving touch to your baby’s delicate skin.
And beyond that – a design that you can sew together in a matter of hours yet doesn’t look like a cheap store-bought import.
I played with several different designs. One was simple 4 inch squares – kind of like Stephanie’s flannel baby quilt. But sewing all the same size squares together was kind of boring, and my limited creativity didn’t allow me to cut different size squares and sew them together.
Then there was the thought of sewing a traditional quilt block together. But as I thought about the number of seams and how to finish the quilt, I decided against that plan, and went in search for something easier and more fun to make.
After several weeks of looking at pastel flannel squares hanging on my flannel design wall, it occurred to me that maybe I could sew some squares together and add long rectangles in between.
That way, I could have the many colors of the different flannel squares, yet it would be a more interesting design and take less time to sew.
Once I settled in on the plan, the quilt easily followed, and within hours, I had a finished quilt – including tying and binding the quilt.
And you can, too.
This is Video Instruction at it's Best
This flannel baby quilt is so easy that even the most inexperienced quilter can make it within a day or two. And since the instruction is video, you won't have to read through hundreds of confusing pages or figure any thing out on your own.
Not like buying a book that you have to turn the pages in order to tell what to do next, read every sentence or look at the bullet points and try to understand what they are saying, you simply pop this video into your TV or computer, look over my shoulder and watch me work.
It's set up so you can jump to just the parts you need, or watch the entire video from start to finish.
You will see everything - from start to finish, including:
Plus the design of the quilt is flexible enough that you can add or subtract squares and rectangles to make it exactly the size you want – without having any quilt design software or doing any complicated math!
There are probably experienced quilters who will take one look at this flannel baby quilt and say “I can do that without your help.” And they are probably right.
But if you are just learning how to quilt or are interested in learning shortcut techniques for making your quilting easier and more fun, consider this.
The Quick and Easy Flannel Baby Quilt DVD Mentor includes 1 hour 59 minutes and 20 seconds of complete and easy-to-follow quilting instruction that will shortcut your learning to make a baby quilt that "your" baby will love and keep forever - AND will give you a solid foundation for any other quilt you want to make.
To make it even easier, this video instruction is divided into individual follow-along lessons.
Each lesson is set up as a logical segment so you can follow along as you sew your quilt. In each lesson, you will see the process or technique demonstrated while I explain the whys and wherefores of what I am doing, and divulge all of my secrets.
Then pause the video while you sew your quilt and catch up.
Here is just a taste of what is in store:
|
You choose the speed. No worrying about forgetting any of the steps or techniques you saw in the video. If you like, pop in the video and watch it again.
If you start the quilt and then have to delay finishing it, just listen again, and instantly you'll be caught up and ready to sew!
In short, you see and hear exactly what I am doing – everything; no holds barred – making it as easy for you to sew as it is to watch the video - on your time schedule - not the quilt shop timeline.
Every quilt presents its own challenges – easy quilts like this flannel baby quilt, and even quilts made by experienced quilters! The key to success in quilt making is knowing how to resolve each challenge.
You see the challenges I faced – up close and personal. And you’ll watch while I solve each problem, explaining the alternatives and why I chose the method I did.
That way, you will be prepared with an easy solution for the challenges that pop up as you sew your quilt – and not left stranded, hoping for a moment of brilliance.
"And What is My Investment in This Instruction?" you ask.
If you are like many quilters, you've taken workshops, so you know how those work.
You sign up, gather all of your quilting supplies together, show up on the day they choose, but still on time for the class and are eager to learn everything you need to know to make the quilt.
Then the workshop starts and you realize that many of the others in the class are way behind you in their experience, and need extra attention from the teacher.
Or, maybe you happened to sign up for a class that has all experienced quilters in it, and they want to skip everything they already know, and you are left in the dust - confused and irritated, feeling like you just wasted a day and a bunch of money, and still don't know how to make the quilt.
And then there are other quilterss who just want some kind of attention - "Should I use this fabric, or that fabric?" "Is this the way you sew the straight seam?" "Slow down, I haven't finished cutting my strips yet."
Who cares what the answers to those questions, you need to know how to sew the pieces together, and the teacher is so busy answering their questions, she doesn't have time for you.
At the end of the day maybe your quilt would be finished. But, more likely it wouldn't be.
And by the end of the workshop, you would realize that you don't have all of the information you need to finish the quilt - after all, how many times do you get to bind a quilt during a workshop, or even sew on borders? And in order to figure it all out, you will need to attend another workshop, buy a bunch of books, or talk to all of your quilting friends.
So how useful was the workshop, anyway?
You watched the teacher or explain everything, and maybe you took notes, but between listening to her, cutting and sewing your fabric, keeping track of all of your patches and filtering out all of the background whining, you'd be some kind of miracle worker to be able to take great notes and still understand them a month after the workshop.
With this DVD, you'll always have the instruction you need - to watch when you want, as many times as you want, and at your convenience.
Or, you could sign up for individual instruction and pay someone $75 or $100 per hour to show you how to make this quilt.
I don't know about you, but I paying someone to watch me sew or standing over someone watching her sew doesn't sound like an efficient use of time or money - especially at $75 or $100 an hour. Plus, when she goes away, the instruction goes away.
With this DVD instruction, you can pop a DVD into your computer or TV, watch the whole process - from start to finish - or choose just the few minutes you need to get you back on track again.
And the other option is to get a bunch of books showing patterns for baby quilts, along with what they call "step-by-step instructions." If you have ever really tried to follow those instructions, they assume you know how to cut your fabric strips, sew the blocks together and measure for your borders.
As a result their instructions end up being about 1 page long, with the rest of the pages filled with pictures of quilts, templates that you have to trace or cut out of the book, confusing diagrams where you can't tell the right side of the fabric from the wrong side, arrows showing you how to put things together (how helpful is that?), and a bunch of comments from the author about how she got started quilting and who all is in her family (nice information, but that isn't going to get your quilt made)!
Then you get another book, and it has the same things, but maybe 1 or 2 new bits of information. So, you get another book, and by the time you have all of the books about making baby quilts, your bookshelf is full, you have spent $298.53, and it takes all 25 books to get the information you need to make the quilt.
With this DVD instruction, you get everything you need in a few convenient DVDs containing information you can use for every quilt you make - in addition to this flannel baby quilt.
After all - Isn’t your time worth something?
You get more quilting tips, techniques and shortcuts than you would ever get in a personal consultation, let alone in a live workshop or class, for a mere fraction of the investment.
And, you can look back at each and every step of how to complete your flannel baby quilt project whenever you want to and as many times you need to – without feeling stupid or embarrassed for reviewing it eleven times. You can even watch in your jammies or sweats or while the kids or grandkids [or hubbie] are taking a nap!
Just think of how many hours you would spend pawing through books looking at instructions about how to complete a cuddly flannel baby quilt, reading them and then trying to figure out exactly what they are telling you, so you can try it yourself. The thing is that most books show baby quilt designs that take so much time to make that you would be horrified thinking about normal baby accidents happening to your quilt.
This flannel baby quilt is so easy to make and cuddly to use, that you would be disappointed if mom and baby didn't use it.
Plus if you are anything like I am, once you have read everything and think you know what you are supposed to do, there are still some surprises along the way. But, when you watch someone actually do something, each step becomes clear and the surprise is only at the end when it all works out the way it is supposed to.
Not only am I an experienced quilter, but I've put together many quilting instruction DVDs, and I know how to put the instructions and video together so you get only clear information that will guide you through creating a quilt for a loved one.
I don't spend time and money on fancy staging, lighting or dressing up to show you how I make my quilts. And, I don't set everything up so it all comes out perfect. This is reality quilting - you see exactly how I am set up for making quilts in my home - crawling around on the floor, nudging the kitties out of my way, moving piles of fabric off of my cutting table.
Sound familiar?
And because it is reality quilting, you can do exactly the same thing.
What Are Others Saying?
But, don't just take my word for how valuable this quilting instruction is. Here are comments from quilters who have used my DVDs to learn how to make a quilt:
|
I really loved your DVD, I have watched it through once and plan on going through it again. It is so nice to see things close up and get a clear explanation of the project. Gayle Leone, Salem, New Hampshire What I liked best about the DVD mentor is that you could WATCH Penny (over, and over, and over, sometimes..) and refer to the manual as needed. It has proven to be a great resource for me. Liz Pilon, Cheboygan, Michigan Using the very easy 'laymans' terms and excellent pictures from your book, I made a quilt using local print and dyed fabric (French Polynesian) for my friend's newborn. Taking your advice, I then embroidered a who to, why and who from including the date, I also included weight and time of birth. Caitlin was delighted and says it was the best baby gift she received. She has now left New Caledonia and gone to La Reunion. The quilt I made will be in her family and that of her son's, hopefully for many years. It will also remind her son and his family of where he was born with a touch of 'je ne sais quoi'. Thanks for getting my efforts organised Annette Moulin, New Caledonia Penny, I can't begin to tell you how much I'm enjoying the set of DVD's to help me master the art of quilting. I've followed your instructions to the "T" and I think I'm finally getting the whole process. I bought another set of DVD's, when I didn't think my order went through with you, and I'm so disappointed with them. The two ladies seems confused and are giving totally different information from what I've gleaned in watching quilting shows on TV. They remind me of ME quilting, turning the fabric first one way and then the other and not seeming to know which end is up, literally. I just wanted to let you know how much help you're giving to me even though you're miles away. I love the "feel" of your video's as well, a homespun, bird in the background, what sounds like a dog slurping water, etc. It reminds me of being in a familiar home of a good friend, not an impersonal video teacher. I think everyone who's on the fence about ordering should do so. What I learned is well worth the price and in installments no less, what could be better. Roberta Kelly

EQ6 Quilt Design Software File
This is an original idea! But with so many quilters having EQ6 or EQ7, I figured why not include the project file on the CD? After all, it doesn't take up much space.
That way you will have all of the information I used to create the quilt and block patterns, templates and rotary cutting instructions and you can make changes to the file to fit your needs.
Add blocks, add sashing, change the border, remove the cornerstones right in the software. Play with the design to your heart's delight, knowing that when you have a design you like, you can simply print out pictures, templates and rotary cutting directions.
Who even knows what this is worth! I've never seen anyone offer it before - most of the time I fuss around copying the block design and quilt pattern into the software so I can make the changes I want. Now you won't waste any time with the set up - just load it up and play.
