From: Penny Halgren

Dear Friend,

If you are anything like I am, when you look at a quilt with more than 2 triangles, you take a deep breath and seriously re-consider whether that is the quilt you really want to make, or whether you can find a quilt that has no triangles.

I had been quilting for many years before I decided to take on the challenge of sewing triangles, or pointy corners.

As a matter of fact, my first experience with anything other than a square, rectangle or an applique heart was a Lone Star Quilt.

"Crazy," you say? Maybe. But that quilt was completely hand pieced. It took two years to finish, but every point was perfect. I just kept taking out stitches and putting them in again - until the point was perfect. That probably had something to do with why it took two years.

To be fair, that was meant to be a special quilt. It was for our queen size bed, and it was my pride and joy. Hand pieced, hand quilted. And holes punched in it by a contractor husband (ex-husband, that is) who flopped down on it in his grimy jeans and bounced the dog on it with his sharp claws.

After the second hole, the quilt came off the bed and took up residence on a shelf in the closet. And I could no longer admire the perfection of every pointy tip every time I walked past my bed.

As my quilting journey progressed, I stumbled upon Amish quilts, and immediately was enchanted by the brilliant color combinations. Ultimately I decided that I would make an Amish-style quilt.

Thousands of Triangles

After searching through books of patterns, I decided to make an Ocean Waves quilt using some batik fabric - since I am an ocean-kind-of-gal.

As stupid as this sounds, it was only after I bought the fabric and was ready to cut, that it occurred to me that there were hundreds, maybe thousands, of triangles in that quilt.

As I laboriously cut each triangle out, I wondered why I ever got the idea that making a quilt with so many triangles was even remotely a good idea.

But, I had the fabric, had started cutting triangles and laying them out as I was going to sew them together; I just kept on going.

By the time that quilt was finished, I thought I was done with Ocean Waves quilts triangles. Most of the points on the triangles left a lot to be desired. Some points were cut off.

They started out perfectly pointy, but by the time I sewed the next row or border on, in order to get the border on straight, I had to cut off the tips of many of the triangles along the way.

And then, there were the triangles that were pointy, but the points were in the wrong place!

Instead of the point meeting the next row or border, there was background fabric between the tip of the triangle and the adjoining fabric. That wasn't good either.

I'll admit that there were a few triangles that were perfect and in the right place, but it was the exception rather than the rule.

Once that Ocean Waves quilt was finished and hanging, I thought I would be finished with Ocean Waves quilts. I was frustrated with triangles because they took a long time to sew together, and I couldn't get all of the points pointy.

It didn't take long for me to get the triangle bug again. As I started exploring more quilt blocks, it became apparent that I could either remain frustrated with my imperfect triangles, give up and decide that imperfection was perfect, or figure out a way to make most of them perfect - or at least close to perfect.

And I began to discover that there were quilters with shortcuts for sewing triangles and techniques that made perfect triangles possible, and even easy - by just paying attention to a few details.

Several quilts later, I had gotten to the point where my triangle tips are, for the most part, pretty perfect. Simply by using the techniques and shortcuts I have learned over the years. And you can learn how to make them perfect, too.

Perfect Triangles Without the Pain of Trial and Error Mistakes of Learning

In an online survey a few months ago, several quilters said that they wanted to learn how to sew triangles better. Wanting to help you with your quilting challenges, I decided to put together my best techniques for sewing triangles.

As you know, there are many different kinds of triangles - half-square triangles, isosceles triangles, right angle triangles, and many more I'm sure.

perfect triangles
Using the techniques in this DVD, your triangle points will meet in the center just like these in the Flutter Wheels quilt block.

The challenge for me was to create a quilting opportunity where you could learn how to stitch several different kinds of triangles in the same quilt, without feeling like you were just "doing a lesson."

To accomplish that, I chose two different quilt blocks - Flutter Wheels, because it has several half-square triangles, and Shining Star, because it has a few isosceles triangles that are split in the middle. And, just to throw in one more triangle, I chose an isosceles triangle, without the split in the center, for the pieced border.

Since it is easier to learn by watching video, I pulled out my camera, and took video of each and every step along the way, revealing my techniques and tips for sewing perfect triangles - tips, corners and all!

As with all quilts, this one took some time – to make, to video tape and to edit.

When I make a quilt and nobody is watching, I just scratch out some pictures, color in some designs with crayons, and start cutting fabric. There’s not a whole lot of organized planning that goes into it.

But, knowing that you were going to be watching, I wanted to make it as easy to follow as possible which meant that the design had to be right, the blocks had to fit and most of the ideas had to be figured out before I started cutting fabric.

Even so, no quilt goes together exactly the way it was planned. At least none of my quilts have gone together that way. That’s not to say they are a mess, but often as I make a quilt I discover a shortcut or an alternative method to increase the accuracy of my stitching.

And exactly that happened as I made this quilt. After I cut the fabric for the triangles in the little star points in the Spring Star quilt block, I realized that it would be easier and more accurate to sew it a different way. So you get to see both ways of sewing that patch together!

In the design process I decided to make a pieced border for this quilt, so it would be more interesting. I have yet to make a quilt with a pieced border that comes out exactly even. When that happens, there are choices to make - add a narrow border between the center of the quilt top and the pieced border, add narrow strips between some of the pieces in the pieced border, or ??

In this quilt, too, there is the challenge of how many pieces to make to create the border, and what to do to make it come out even. (I added a narrow border between the center of the quilt top and the border.)

The design looked good, and it all came out even on paper. But the blocks that should have been 9 1/2 inches square, ended up being 9 1/4 inches square. And just that difference made the pieced border not fit.

how to quilt

Rather than rip everything out, I looked at what I had and considered my choices. You get to hear the choices, and see how I decided to solve the dilemma.

That’s right. In this Fluttering Stars DVD Mentor, you get to see the good, the bad and the challenging. There’s no ugly in it!

But, as in any quilt, there are challenges. And you will watch as I talk through what is happening, the choices and how I solve each problem. Nothing covered up; I don't pretend that the mistake wasn't made. You get to see it, hear the possible solutions and then see how I solve the problem.

Most quilters keep their challenges and mistakes secret, thinking that you will think less of them by exposing that they made a mistake or that something didn’t turn out just the way they planned it.

On the other hand, I think that by sharing the challenges with you, your quilting life will be easier. First by making sure that you don’t make the same mistake as you sew this quilt.

And second, by describing the choices and explaining why I chose the way I did, you will know how to solve problems when you face the same dilemma with your quilt, saving you time and frustration.

Announcing . . . the Fluttering Stars DVD Quilting Mentor

So, here it is – the latest DVD Quilting Mentor – showing you step-by-step exactly how to make a bright and beautiful Fluttering Stars Quilt.

This quilt is a combination of two traditional patchwork blocks – Flutter Wheels and Spring Star. They are set on point in this quilt, which adds interest and some pizzazz.

Your family and friends will be amazed when they see the quilt with all of the blocks on a diagonal, and they will wonder how you sewed it together.

And how you did it will remain our secret.

The first time I saw a quilt with blocks set on point, I was intrigued. I spent weeks trying to figure out how it was sewn together. Finally one day, I saw a pattern and looked at the instructions for sewing it together.

Wow! It was really easy, and it just took someone showing me how to do it. And that is exactly what you will see in this video, just like our other DVD Mentors.

If you are anything like I was, and have been afraid to make a quilt that is a little more challenging, . . . don’t blame yourself.  I’ve read the books, seen the patterns, and have experienced the frustration – firsthand – of incomplete directions, wrong methods, and instructions that are so confusing, I don’t know which way is up, let alone which is the right side of the fabric.

You probably just need a few key skills.  Have you ever said to yourself, “If someone would just show me how to do all of this once or twice, then I could do it for myself?”

Imagine how much faster of a jumpstart you could get by actually watching someone else do something first, then simply copying exactly what they do.

Makes sense, right?

It’s tough learning new information out of a book.  Statistics prove that only a tiny percentage of people naturally learn this way.  The rest of us need to be SHOWN what to do, and - - most importantly - - HOW to do it!

And besides, most quilt books have chapters describing individual steps or processes.   One chapter shows you how to sew triangles.  Another chapter shows you how to make binding and sew it on.  Yet another chapter describes how to add sashing to your quilt.  All of that is great information, if you know what process you need, when you need it, and how it applies in the quilt you are making.

It's Not Your Fault - -
You Just Needed Someone to Actually Show You a Few Key Skills.
That's Where the Video Comes In

Because here at How-to-Quilt we want to make quilting easy, years ago, we turned to video for quilting instruction. Oh, I know, there are lots of quilting videos around. In fact, by now most of the big name quilters have some kind of video.

And they all say that you will learn how to make a quilt using their videos.

But when you really look at the video, you will discover that their video instruction is not much different than the so-called step-by-step instructions in most quilting books. You get a bunch of isolated clips on a 45 minute DVD. How much detail can you really see in 45 minutes? And how are you supposed to connect all of the dots, when the video clips might not even be in the right order?

You Get All of the Details With Us

Here at www.How-to-Quilt.com, we do quilting videos, and our videos give you true step-by-step guidance as you make your gorgeous family heirloom.

We know that you could figure it all out by yourself, but why spend weeks, months or even years "figuring it out" when you could simply watch the instruction and then spend time choosing your fabric and enjoying seeing the bright smile on their faces when you hand them a finished quilt with your stitches in it?

As you zip your way through these videos, you will discover:

  • A simple way to square up your fabric so you are guaranteed to cut straight strips
  • A quick and accurate way to sew isosceles triangles together, saving you time and making your patches more square.
  • A shortcut method for sewing those often-used half-square triangles. This method saves you time as well as making your half-square triangles perfect square patches.
  • The no math method for cutting the triangles to fill in the ends of the rows
  • How to center the pieced border on your quilt top without measuring
  • How to miter the corners on your final border without tears, frustration, ripping and re-sewing, or measuring to the nearest 1/32 of an inch. (This alone is worth your investment!)
  • and much more

By the end of the video, your quilting skills will amaze your closest friends and family. They might even accuse you of having hired someone to make the quilt for you.

We have done high quality, complete video quilting instruction for years. And here is what a few quilters have said about our Robin's Nest DVD Quilting Mentor:

"I really loved your DVD, I have watched it through once and plan on going through it again. It is so nice to see things close up and get a clear explanation of the project."

Gayle Leone, Salem, New Hampshire

"I have not had a chance to start a quilt yet but I did take the time to review the DVDs to see if I had made a good investment. After watching the DVDs I was eager and still am to start on a quilt by myself. I am new to quilting and have only made three with the help of the teacher working with me. The classes go rather fast and sometimes I am left with unanswered questions.

"With the way the DVDs are done, I am taken through the whole process as if someone is standing beside me showing me exactly what to do and answer my questions before I even ask. Creating these discs was a wonderful idea especially for a person as myself and others new to the quilter world. It will also continue to be of value to me as my experience increases for review. Thank You for your help. I now have a renewed spirit for quilting."

Patricia Little, Wilmington, North Carolina

"I thought that the Robins nest DVDs are a great help to someone like myself who has never quilted before. I especially like the way you describe everything in such detail, and all the close ups are just wonderful, I watched all the DVD's and thought that I can do this, well not quite, but I have made a small cot size for my best friend Tiny (dog) and it came out quit well with only one mistake.

Penny you have done a wonderful job on the DVD's and I would highly recommend for any would be quilter to have a look at the DVD's first. I have learnt a lot from them, without them I would not of started Quilting.

Thank you so much for all you input, and keep up your good work."

Kindest regards, Inge K., NSW, Australia

The Big Deal Here is the Video - 6 DVDs of Video
Totaling 5 Hours, 24 minutes and 40 seconds, to be Exact

If you've ever looked at quilting videos, they are just the same as quilting books! A two minute clip here about how to cut fabric, another one minute clip about sewing a triangle. And, yet another one or two minute clip about binding a quilt.

Plus, most other quilting videos are about 45 minutes long. And what can you learn in 45 minutes? If you just needed to see a technique here, and some quick shortcut there, a 45 minute video might be great.

But, you can't learn to make an entire quilt, just by looking at a 45 minute video - even if you watched it 6 times! Because, you still are missing the answer to the "what do I do next?" question.

Not with this video! We take all of the guesswork and mystery out of what to do next, and show you exactly what each and every step is - from start to finish.

Here Are Just A Few Of The Lessons We’ll Go Through Together To Get You On The Road To Making This Quilt

What’s the cost to put Me on Your Quilting Team?

By now you may be wondering about your investment in this valuable resource.

Well, put it this way.

If you hired me to consult with you to cover all of the points on these DVDs and CDs, it would take 20-25 hours.  And at a rate of $40 per hour, that would set you back about $1,000 – and that doesn’t count travel, meals or telephone expenses.  Plus at the end of that time, your head would be spinning, your notes would be flying, and you still wouldn't know exactly where to begin.

Or you could spend $40-$50 for some more quilting books, plus $20-$30 each for some books with quilting tips and then try to figure it all out yourself.

Remember, though, it’s taken me 27 years of making all different kinds of quilts, plus an investment of hundreds, maybe thousands, of dollars to sort through all of the clutter of information and give you only the best.  And I know you want to make your quilt straightaway and bypass all of that torture and unnecessary expense.

You could copy the picture of the block, draft it yourself using your ruler, pencil and eraser.  Oh, and remember to add seam allowances when you make your templates.  Or, do you add them when you cut the template? Could be a good question.

Then take your calculator and figure out how much of each fabric you need for the size quilt you want to make, go out and buy the fabric, come home and figure out for yourself each and every step along the way – scouring the books to see what might come next, reading through the seven different ways to do the same thing, picking one, making a mistake, and then either re-doing it or giving up!

By now you may have spent hours trying to figure this all out yourself and you still don’t have a finished quilt.

Maybe you have already made a bunch of quilts and think you have seen it all already.  Maybe, but if you are anything like I am, every time I pick up a quilting book or magazine, I learn something new from just one little comment or picture.  Just imagine what you could learn from 86 pages of step-by-step quilting and 5 1/2 hours of live quilting on DVD.

Every quilter has unique shortcuts and techniques that she has developed over time. The big difference is that I am happy to share mine! (Not all quilters are.) You see the ones that will speed up your quilting.

Isn’t your time worth something?

This 6 DVD set covers practically the same thing you would get in a personal consultation for a mere fraction of the investment.

And, you can look back at each and every step of making this quilt whenever you want to and how ever many times you need to – without feeling stupid or embarrassed for reviewing it eleven times. (You can even watch in your jammies or sweats or while the kids or grandkids [or hubbie] are taking a nap!)

How do you put them into the same quilt?

When Sharyn Craig (Quilt Teacher, Quilt Maker and Quilt Lover) was our guest for our Eavesdrop on a Telephone Conversation, she shared her secrets for handling those different sized blocks without ripping them apart and starting over. One of the obvious answers is to just trim them. But, should you really do that?
