Greetings Quilter -

Have you ever taken a long car trip, gone on a cruise, or had a bunch of appointments and wished that you had a portable quilting project?

When quilting daughter, Stephanie, and engineering son, Bubba, were small, every year we would jump into the car and drive.

One year we spent two weeks driving to Devils Lake, North Dakota and back. Another year, we toured Yosemite and the redwood forests of Northern California. Then there was the trip through Colorado - - - -

After packing as many toys and other primitive child-entertainment devices (this was before iPods and in-car TV), food for lunches in the park, and enough clothes to get us from one laundromat to the next, I was always able to find some space for a small quilting project.

It wasn't the stitching that was difficult. We always traveled during the day, so the light was good. There would always be a few hours when the kids were sleeping, making it quiet. And ex-husband, Bob, didn't talk much while driving, so there weren't many distractions there.

The limitation was the size of the project. The year I decided to hand piece my broken star quilt, I thought I was well-prepared. All of the pieces were cut, and organized - or so I thought. After about two days of driving, they were a jumbled mess, and it would have taken a convention center floor to get them straightened out. So much for making progress on that project.

The next year, I was going to outsmart myself. I took a quilt. And a hoop. And I was just going to hand quilt. How difficult could that be?

In the end, it was probably as difficult as hand piecing the broken star. It was summer and about 107 degrees outside, the air conditioning in the car broke, the quilt covered my lap making it even hotter, and it was nearly impossible to turn the hoop around to quilt easily.

That project got put away during the trip, too. And then there was nothing to do for much of the trip. Yes, the scenery was beautiful - when there was some. But, through the plains of South Dakota, once you've seen some of it, you've pretty much seen it all.

The trips were fine; we all survived those many days in the car; but my quilting projects didn't make much progress. Though frustrated, I finally learned to leave them at home.

If I had only know about - or thought about - doing a Quilt as You Go Project. Then I could have taken patches for blocks with me and finished one block at a time. I would have had a bag of patches in the car and then once finished, the blocks could have been stored carefully in the trunk.

Quilt as you go projects are really fun and easy, and your design can be anything you want it to be.

And they are perfectly named, because you piece the block (either by hand or machine) and then quilt it - one block at a time.

The blocks can be either hand pieced and hand quilted or machine pieced and machine quilted - or some other variation. The idea is that by working on just one block at a time, each block is easier to work on and before you know it, you have a stack of blocks that are ready to be sewn into a quilt.

Your quilt can be any size, too. Quilt as you go projects can be as small as a 4 block wall hanging, or they can be a king size quilt.

Nice idea. But how do you actually do it?

During our survey last summer, hundreds of you said you wanted more information about the Quilt as You Go technique. After all, maybe you have heard about the technique, but don't know much about it, and can't quite imagine how to put the blocks together and finish the quilt.

I'll admit that when I first heard of the technique, I needed to have someone show me how it all works. I had a hard time imagining what to do with all of the extra batting and backing fabric. And then, how would I add borders? What if I wanted sashing? It just wasn't that obvious.

I poured through books trying to figure it out. I searched scores of websites, picking up bits and pieces of the technique from each, but not finding one place that clearly walked me through the whole method - from start to finish.

Once I understood the technique, I was going to write some simple instructions and post them on the site. But each time I wrote something, the instructions ended up confusing me - let alone a quilter who has not used this technique before. Even having photos of each step in the process didn't help.

So, I decided to do a short video demonstrating the technique.

After one project was complete, I went back to the computer and discovered a completely different method for doing a Quilt as You Go project - sewing the quilt backing so it showed on the top of the quilt.

What began as a simple demonstration of one way to complete a Quilt as You Go project turned into video demonstrations of two completely different methods.

Then the question was asked, "How do you add sashing to the blocks?" So I created a video showing how to do that using both techniques.

Within a short period of time, we had a set of 3 DVDs showing how to make Quilt as You Go projects four different ways.

quilt as you go project

Once those were complete, the "what if" question was - "What if I wanted to do a Quilt as You Go Foundation Pieced Project?"

What a brilliant idea!

After all, wouldn't it be easier and quicker if the patches were sewn directly onto the batting and backing? That way, the piecing and quilting would be finished at the same time.

With that in mind, I started a new project. I chose a simple block and cut out all of the pieces I needed to make it.

But the quilt block design I chose wasn't working out right. So, the cut-out patches sat nicely piled up - ready to sew, but there they sat - useless for this project.

In order to complete piecing and quilting, units of the block would need to be sewn together separately and then sewn onto the batting and backing - somewhat defeating the purpose of the whole thing, since the idea was to sew all of the patches directly onto the foundation.

Weeks passed, and eventually I decided to pick up the project again. This time, I kept in mind the piecing part of this project and figured out that the key is to be able to add pieces that can be sewn and then flipped over and another one sewn on top - until the block is complete.

With this in mind, I chose a 4 block wall hanging using the quilt block 3 Kings Journey.

It is a fabulous project for this method of Quilt as You Go. It's easy to sew, and you will learn the Quilt as You Go technique plus have an elegant project when you finish.

You can make it the size of a wall hanging, or increase the number of blocks and make a bed quilt. And you have all of the information you need to make it larger, if you want.

Because I wanted to make this project fun and not leave anything out that you might want to include in this or most any other quilt project, I added sashing with cornerstones.

In our original Quilt as You Go project with sashing, the pieces were solid fabric with no cornerstones added. Cornerstones are simple to add to the sashing and they add to the beauty and interest of the quilt. Using the technique shown in this video, you will be able to add cornerstones and sashing to any quilt you make, whether or not it is a Quilt as You Go project.

And finally the binding. We are learning so much about binding and have seen many different ways to bind a quilt, even how to bind a quilt using piping. But, in a slight twist, this Quilt as You Go project has binding with piping that folds out and extends past the edge of the quilt, giving you yet another new way to bind a quilt. It's like getting an extra bonus!

quilt as you go Your questions answered for all of these methods!

And now, what began as a simple video has turned into your complete resource for any Quilt as You Go project. It answers all of your questions about creating quilts using these techniques:

  • How much extra batting and backing should I have - I want enough to get a nice finish, but not too much that I am throwing yards of fabric that is trimmed away from each block.
  • How do I trim the batting - should it be even with the raw edge of the block, beyond it, or less than the block?
  • What should I do with the backing so it looks nice as I sew the blocks together - close the raw edges as I sew the blocks together, or wait until the top is sewn together?
  • How do I sew the blocks into a row so I can attach another row to the top and bottom?
  • How much sewing can I do on the machine vs. by hand?
  • How do I add sashing - with each block as I sew it, or as I sew the blocks together?
  • What if I want to add cornerstones in my sashing?
  • How do I add borders once all of the blocks are sewn together?
  • Is there more than one way to sew the blocks together?

It's like so many other things about quilting - all of these questions are easily answered when you have a few tips and techniques to guide you along the way.

This updated Quilt as You Go resource includes 5 DVDs showing how to make two variations of two completely different styles of Quilt as You Go projects plus a Foundation Pieced project.

In the first DVD, you will see how to sew blocks together side by side, and then trim the batting and backing, and close the backing of the quilt. This is a very simple method and doesn't use sashing.

But just because the method is simple, doesn't mean that you are limited to simple 9 patch blocks or solid squares.

This technique can be used for any block of any size. As a matter of fact, lap quilting expert, Georgia Bonesteel, has made scores of beautiful heirloom quilts using this exact technique. The blocks she used for her quilts range from very easy to very complex blocks. And the methods she uses are the exact same as the ones you will learn in this DVD set.

quilt as you go project

quilt as you go method

In the 2nd DVD, you will see a method that was brand new to me. In this method, you machine stitch the backing fabric together between the blocks, and then fold the seam allowances over on the front of the quilt for the finishing.

This method is a great choice if you want to do all of your stitching on the machine. It has a completely different look, and it is a good idea to plan your backing fabric well, since it will show on the front of your quilt.

This method gives you an option of using the backing as sashing, too - saving time and fabric.

In the 3rd DVD, you will see how to complete these projects when you vary your sashing options.

In the first method, you see how to add sashing between the blocks. This separates your blocks, giving them the look of being nicely framed.

In the second method, you see what your quilt will look like if you add sashing to only one side of the blocks and fold the backing onto the front of the quilt.

It is an interesting look and offers some fun options for quilts.

quilt as you go project

In the 4th DVD, you see - step-by-step how to sew this foundation pieced wall hanging. By sewing each piece onto a foundation, you are quilting and piecing as you go - saving tons of time.

Once the blocks are completed, you learn how to add the sashing with cornerstones and the borders.

And in the 5th DVD, you get the detailed steps for adding the binding with piping that extends beyond the edge of your wall hanging or quilt.

quilt as you go

Because I remember what it is like to learn something new, these DVDs include clear instructions with details exactly where you need them. In these videos you will learn:

lap quiltingHow to figure out how much batting and backing you need so you are sure to have enough fabric, but don't spend a bunch of extra money for this project

quilt as you goHow to trim your blocks, backing and sashing at every step along the way so your quilt is flat and you don't have any gaps or bulges

quilting on the run How to line up the blocks to stitch them together so you end up with square corners and pointy triangles

quilt as you go projectWhat to do with the batting between the blocks so only you will know that it isn't one large piece of batting

how to make a quilt as you go quiltHow to measure the backing for the overlap, ensuring a smooth, flat seam

how to quilt a lap quiltHow to secure the backing so you can create hidden hand stitches

quilt as you go techniqueHow to attach two rows together so the blocks line up and your finished quilt looks like it was made like a traditional quilt.

quilt as you goHow to add borders that frame your quilt beautifully

lap quiltingHow to make sure that your block is in the center of your foundation. This secret can make the difference between a project that goes together easily and one that you struggle with.

lap quilt as you goHow to attach patches to a foundation so they are flat, not all puckery.

small quilt projectWhat to do when your block isn't sewn perfectly square onto a foundation. This could be a major problem for a Quilt as You Go project. Watch how I solved the problem so nobody can tell it happened.

make and take quilt projectHow to add simple sashing or sashing with cornerstones between your blocks and rows, and around the outside of your quilt so the cornerstones line up with your blocks and make perfectly square corners.

make it and take it quiltand much more . . .

And that's in the DVDs that show how to make the quilt or wallhanging.

Adding the binding to this wall hanging is so unique

that it has its own separate DVD - totally dedicated to showing you how to:

  • cut fabric strips to make piping
  • measure the cording so you are sure you have enough to fit around your quilt or wall hanging
  • stitch the cording inside the strips to ensure perfect piping that will make a beautiful finish for your quilt
  • trim the piping to ensure the perfect width for your quilt or wall hanging
  • sew the piping around your quilt so it lies flat, including creating smooth corners
  • close the piping so you have a smooth, flat finish when you get back to where you started attaching the piping to your quilt
  • add the binding on your quilt and secure it - finishing your quilt beautifully
  • and much more

What's the Cost to Add This to Your Quilting Toolbox?

By now you may be wondering about the cost of this valuable resource.

Well, put it this way.

If you hired me to consult with you to cover all of the points on these 5 DVDs, it would run in the neighborhood of 15 hours.  And at a rate of $40 per hour, that would set you back about $600 – and that doesn’t count travel or telephone expenses.  Plus at the end of that time, your head would be spinning, your notes would be flying, and you still wouldn't know exactly where to begin.

You could attend a one or two day workshop, pay $70-$90, and sit through a class with other quilters who are way ahead of you in quilting experience and impatient with others lacking their experience. Or there could be a bunch of quilters with less experience than you who want to hold up the entire workshop until they catch up. I'm sure that you've been in workshops with those quilters, haven't you? If you are anything like I am, when you leave a workshop like that, you are frustrated and just want to scream. And then you promise yourself you will never sign up for another one like that again! In the meantime, you still don't have all of the information you need to complete your project easily and without frustration.

Or you could spend $90-$100 for some specialized quilting books, and then try to figure it all out yourself. The thing is, I have yet to find a currently published book with all of the valuable tips you will get in this package - let alone a video to show you what to do and how to do it. Plus you can watch these videos as many times as you need to, and just the parts you need - or the whole thing.

Remember, it’s taken me 27 years of making all different kinds of quilts, plus an investment of thousands, of dollars to sort through all of the clutter of information and give you only the best.  And I know you want to get to the heart of making beautiful quilts and bypass all of that torture and unnecessary expense.

After all - Isn’t your time worth something?

This 5 DVD set covers practically the same thing you would get in a personal consultation for a mere fraction of the investment.

And, you can look back at each and every step of how to complete a Quilt as You Go project whenever you want to and how ever many times you need to – without feeling stupid or embarrassed for reviewing it eleven times. (You can even watch in your jammies or sweats or while the kids or grandkids [or hubbie] are taking a nap!)

Just think of how many hours you would spend pawing through books looking at instructions about how to complete a Quilt as You Go Project, reading them and then trying to figure out exactly what they are telling you, so you can try it yourself. That's assuming you can even find the books or instructions. Trust me, I've scoured the bookstores, amazon, and the internet for complete and easy-to-understand instructions for Quilt as You Go projects, and found no good resource.

If you are anything like I am, once you have read everything and think you know what you are supposed to do, there are still some surprises along the way. But, when you watch someone actually do something, each step becomes clear and the surprise is only at the end when it all works out the way it is supposed to. And in this project you know right up front that the blocks for my foundation pieced project were not square, so you will see how I handled that problem and will know what to do in case that happens on one of your projects.

Here is what one quilter had to say about the set:

"Hi, Penny
I just wanted to thank you for this quilt-as-you-go instruction.  I am currently making my first quilt, and this is the method I'm using.  Our teacher showed how to join the blocks in class, but it was so quick, I had already forgotten by the time I got home.  Your video is so helpful, and has now given me the confidence I need to do it myself.  Thank you so much,
"
