Greetings Quilter -

Sometimes as I stuff a quilt through that tiny space under the arm of my sewing machine, I wish the quilt were smaller.

"It's just a twin size quilt. Why should it be so difficult to work on?"

Whether I crunch it, fan-fold it, or gather it up, even a twin size quilt is bulky to work with, and getting my machine quilting stitches even and straight is a frustrating task, at best.

Yes, I have and use all of the machine quilting shortcuts and techniques to make the job easier - including using my super-duper gloves, spray basting the quilt so I don't have pins to work around, and installing my special cardboard box platform so the quilt is fully supported as it goes under the needle.

But, I still get uneven stitches, quilting designs that only a mother could love (and you know that means they are really misshapen), occasional puckers and pleats on the back of the quilt, and - above all - frustration!

The problem, of course, is that I made the quilt to be the size I want, but it's all sewn together and layered, and now the center of the quilt is 50 inches away from the edge and I have to figure out how to fit the quilt in a hole the size only a mole could fit in.

And if I am hand quilting, I end up with the entire quilt draped over my lap and couch. During the cold winter, that isn't such a problem, except when the cats want to sleep on the ends of the quilt and it's time to shift the quilt around.

But when it's 103 degrees inside my house, those unquilted quilts sit there longingly - waiting for a cooler day.

On days like those, I keep reminding myself that making quilts is supposed to be fun and relaxing. But somehow only the thought of having the quilt finished and seeing the smile on the face of the recipient keeps me going.

There Must be a Better Way!

Last year, we explored a technique that was new to me - Quilt as You Go.

With this technique, you sew one quilt block together and then layer and quilt it.

Once the blocks are finished to that point, you stitch them together. Add a border, and a short time later, your quilt is complete!

Your quilting is perfect, because you have stitched a piece that is one quilt block size - maybe 12 inches square - and easily fits into the small space in your sewing machine for machine quilting, or a small hoop for hand quilting.

Since then, Quilt as You Go projects have become extremely popular among our How-to-Quilt.com quilters.

And, it's not too surprising, with quilters always on the move and looking for ways to make their projects portable or just easier to work on, that Quilt as You Go techniques are a perfect solution to our every day quilting challenges.

Yet, don't get fooled by the title - "Quilt as You Go."

Yes, these are fabulous techniques for creating beautiful quilts that you can easily take with you to your appointments around town, travel across the country or around the world, or maybe even take to your neighbor's house for coffee or tea.

But, these are also projects that are easy to work on at home.

Just think:

  • by finishing one block at a time, your machine quilting is easier and your stitches will be more even and perfect, since you don't have all of the bulk of the quilt to worry about as you sew
  • adding binding on one quilt block at a time makes it easier and you are more likely to have binding that lies flat and has smooth corners
  • sometimes it's fun to sew quilt blocks that are different sizes into the same quilt, and using one of these Quilt as You Go techniques allows you to combine different size quilt blocks - whether they are different by design or mistake!
  • you can change the size of your quilt years after you think it's finished - add a row or column of quilt blocks to your quilt using a Quilt as You Go technique, and instantly your quilt is larger and it will look like it was planned that way
  • use your quilt while you work on it - because your quilt blocks have binding on them, you can simply add blocks as you finish them and your quilt is completely usable in the meantime

I'll admit that when I first heard of the Quilt as You Go technique, I needed to have someone show me how it all worked. I had a hard time imagining what to do with all of the extra batting and backing fabric. And then, what if I wanted sashing? Or, how could I add sashing between some of the blocks but not all of them?

It just wasn't that obvious.

I poured through books trying to figure it out. I searched scores of websites, picking up bits and pieces of the technique from each, but not finding one place that walked me through the whole method - from start to finish - in a way that I could easily understand.

Once I figured it all out, I was going to write some simple instructions and post them on the site. But each time I wrote something, the instructions ended up confusing me - let alone a quilter who has not used this technique before. Even having photos of each step in the process didn't help.

So, I decided to do a short video demonstrating the technique.

After one Quilt as You Go project was complete and I realized how simple it was to sew together, it seemed like everywhere I looked, there was another method for completing a Quilt as You Go project.

What began as a simple demonstration of one way to complete a Quilt as You Go project turned into video demonstrations of two completely different methods. Then the question was asked, "How do you add sashing to the blocks?" So I created a video showing how to do that using both techniques.

Within a short period of time, we had a set of 5 DVDs showing how to make Quilt as You Go projects five different ways, and the original Quilt as You Go DVD Set was launched.

quilt as you go project

But, it didn't stop there.

After that product was ready for you, I began to discover several other methods for completing Quilt as You Go Projects, and the second set of techniques shown in the Creative Quilt as You Go DVD Mentor was developed.

These new techniques are just as easy to complete as the first ones, they offer some different, creative methods for finishing your projects.

These techniques include methods for completely finishing one block at a time - including the binding - and then attaching the blocks.

Plus, you'll see how to combine techniques - sew some of the blocks right next to each other and then add sashing between block units on both the front and back of your quilt or wall hanging.

In addition, you'll see how to sew blocks together and then cover the seams on the back with simple sashing strips that can be added either by machine or by hand, a perfect option for quilters who want to create their quilts completely on their sewing machine.

quilt as you go Even more of your questions answered about
Creative Quilt as You Go Techniques!

And now, you have even more options for completing your Quilt as You Go projects. After all, you deserve choices as you create your beautiful family heirlooms, so that your finished quilt design is perfect and easy to make.

Like all of us, before you start something new, you probably have many questions:

  • How do I trim the batting - should it be even with the raw edge of the block, beyond it, or less than the block?
  • How is it possible to bind my blocks and then sew them together so it looks good?
  • Can I really sew finished blocks together on the machine - or will there be some hand work that I don't want?
  • What should I do with the backing so it looks nice as I sew the blocks together
  • How much sewing can I do on the machine vs. by hand?
  • How do I add sashing - especially if I want to add it between some, but not all, of the blocks?
  • Is there more than one way to sew the blocks together?

It's like so many other things about quilting - all of these questions are easily answered when you have a few tips and techniques to guide you along the way.

This updated Quilt as You Go resource includes 4 DVDs showing how to finish your quilt project using the following methods:

Learn how to bind each of your blocks individually and then sew them together to create a beautiful wall hanging or quilt.

Using this method, you can quilt right up to the edge of your block. With other methods of putting Quilt as You Go projects together, you must end 1/2 to 1 inch away from the edge of your block. Now you can quilt to the edge with no worries.

In this video you will also learn how to bind each block using double fold straight grain binding with perfectly mitered corners.

You will see four different methods for connecting the blocks - two on the machine and two using hand stitching. Choose the one that fits the look you want.

quilt as you go with binding

quilt as you go with sashing on the back

Then learn how to connect the blocks directly to each other and cover the back seams with sashing.

Use fabric that matches the back or contrasts with the back - your choice.

Hand stitch the sashing or machine stitch the sashing - choose the style that fits your quilt.

You'll get all of the instructions you need to finish a quilt of any size!

Use a combination of methods for attaching your blocks.

Sets of four blocks in this quilt are sewn directly together and the back seams are hidden using sashing strips.

Then sashing has been added on both the front and back between sets of blocks, creating added interest to the quilt.

Although this takes a couple of extra steps, your finished quilt or wall hanging will be beautiful and your friends will scratch their heads wondering how you did it.

Do you ever end up with blocks that are different sizes?

YoYos may be the solution!

Or, connect your blocks using yoyos just for fun.

These Halloween-themed blocks ended up slightly different sizes - enough that they couldn't be sewn together, but too much to trim without ruining the blocks.

Connecting them with YoYos gives them a fun look while allowing for the different sizes.

You'll learn how to bind your blocks using single fold bias binding as well as how to make 2 different styles of YoYos.

"How Do I Know You Can Teach Me How to Sew a Quilt?"

You ask...And that's great question. After all, there are dozens of people all over the internet today making the exact same claim - and some of them are not even quilters!

So, what makes me different?

Years after I learned how to quilt, my daughter, Stephanie, decided to take sewing classes from Barbara, a lady down the street. Barbara loved to make clothes, and wanted to share her craft with children, so about five of the neighborhood girls went to her house once a week and learned to make clothes.

The clothes were beautiful! And the girls had great fun. Barbara even staged fashion shows in her lovely back yard so these young ladies could show off their accomplishments to family and friends.

Then one day, it happened. Stephanie announced that she wanted to learn how to make a quilt. Barbara panicked. She was an expert at making clothes, but knew nothing about how to sew a quilt. I knew that my daughter didn't want to learn how to make a quilt from me - she wanted Barbara to teach her.

So, Barbara and I hatched a plot.

During the day, when the girls were in school, I went to her house and taught her how to make a quilt. We picked an easy pattern - straight stitching, squares, simple borders, machine quilting, and easy binding. With my step-by-step, easy-to-understand approach, Barbara learned how to make a quilt with skill and ease. That was more than 19 years ago!

And now I have been providing quilting instruction online for more than 5 years, teaching quilting techniques to thousands of quilters at levels - from beginners to advanced quilters.

Because this is brand new instruction that nobody has used yet, I have gathered some comments sent in by quilters who have learned quilting techniques using other www.How-to-Quilt.com resources. Here are just a few:

I really loved your DVD, I have watched it through once and plan on going through it again. It is so nice to see things close up and get a clear explanation of the project. I have a few of your products and love tham all. the best thing is I can pop them in anytime and listen and see what is going on.

I plan to start sewing soon, It has been too hot and humid to sit at my machine but the cooler weather is coming and I will be at home more also. Thanks for all your updates and for keeping me in the loop of things. You are an exceptional person!!!! Fondly,Gale

Penny's Robin's Nest DVD's finally put everything together for me - YAY!!! Before that, my mother in law tried to teach me :)

Many thanks, Carol in Austin, Texas

After watching the DVDs I was eager and still am to start on a quilt by myself. I am new to quilting and have only may three with the help of the teacher working with me. The classes go rather faster and sometimes I am left with unanswered questions.

With the way the DVDs are done, I am taken through the whole process as if someone is standing beside me showing me exactly what to do and answer my questions before I even ask. Creating these disc was a wonderful idea especially for a person as myself and others new to the quilter world. It will also continue to be of value to me as my experience increase for review. Thank You for your help. I now have a renewed spirit for quilting.

Patricia Little, Wilmington, North Carolina

Received my dvd the other day, I have seen the first 2 . I think the info is great and can not wait to start. Thank you for offering this to us. I am just starting to get back into quilting and need all the help I can get, because so much has changed in the past 20 years. Thank you again, God Bless.

What I liked best about the DVD mentor is that you could WATCH Penny (over, and over, and over, sometimes..) and refer to the manual as needed. It has proven to be a great resource for me.

I thought that the Robins nest DVDs are a great help to someone like myself who has never quilted before. I especially like the way you describe everything in such detail, and all the close ups are just wonderful, I watched all the DVD's and thought that I can do this, well not quite, but I have made a small cot size for my best friend Tiny (dog) and it came out quit well with only one mistake.

Penny you have done a wonderful job on the DVD's and I would highly recommend for any would be quilter to have a look at the DVD's first. I have learnt a lot from them, without them I would not of started Quilting.

Thank you so much for all you input, and keep up your good work.

Kindest regards, Inge K., NSW, Australia

Penny,

I learned a lot of helpful details from the book. It's all the little details like how to use a walking foot with machine quilting, techniques with hand quilting, how to cut and measure the fabric properly, and what kinds of borders can be applied and how to make them, that makes quilts unique and look professional.  I was able to finish a beautiful quilt as well as design quilts for each of my five sisters.

I knew nothing about quilting before and now I have a great hobby and I get some beautiful quilts too.

Thanks,
Jennifer

What's the Cost to Add This to Your Quilting Toolbox?

By now you may be wondering about the cost of this valuable resource.

Well, put it this way. These four videos include more than 1 1/2 hours of video instruction covering 2 different methods of binding a quilt plus 4 different Quilt as You Go techniques to connect your blocks.

If you were to hire me to coach you through each of these techniques, it would likely take more than 18 hours of coaching. At a rate of $40 per hour, that would set you back $720. Plus at the end of that time, your head would be spinning, your notes would be flying, and you still wouldn't know exactly where to begin.

You could attend multiple one or two day workshops, pay $70-$90 each, and sit through classes with other quilters who are less experienced than you are, and want to hold up the entire workshop until they catch up.

I'm sure that you've been in workshops with those quilters, haven't you? If you are anything like I am, when you leave a workshop like that, you are frustrated and just want to scream. And then you promise yourself you will never sign up for another one like that again!

One workshop like that would be hard enough. Just imagine sitting through 4 like that to learn these four different techniques - plus the two ways to bind a quilt that you wouldn't learn in these workshops! In the meantime, you still don't have all of the information you need to complete your project easily and without frustration.

Or you could spend $90-$100 for some specialized quilting books (I have 4 books that show Quilt as You Go techniques), and then try to figure it all out yourself. The thing is, I have yet to find a currently published book with all of the techniques and valuable tips included in this package - let alone a video to show you what to do and how to do it.

Plus you can watch these videos as many times as you need to, and just the parts you need - or the whole thing.

Remember, it’s taken me more than 28 years of making all different kinds of quilts, plus an investment of thousands, of dollars to sort through all of the clutter of information and give you only the best.  And I know you want to get to the heart of making beautiful quilts and bypass all of that torture and unnecessary expense.

After all - Isn’t your time worth something?

This 4 DVD set covers practically the same thing you would get in a personal consultation for a mere fraction of the investment.

And, you can look back at each and every step of how to complete each of these four Quilt as You Go projects whenever you want to and how ever many times you need to – without feeling stupid or embarrassed for reviewing it eleven times. (You can even watch in your jammies or sweats or while the kids or grandkids [or hubbie] are taking a nap!)

Just think of how many hours you would spend pawing through books and surfing the internet looking at instructions about how to complete a Quilt as You Go Project, reading them and then trying to figure out exactly what they are telling you, so you can try it yourself. That's assuming you can even find the books or instructions. Trust me, I've scoured the bookstores, amazon, and the internet for complete and easy-to-understand instructions for Quilt as You Go projects, and found no good resource.

If you are anything like I am, once you have read everything and think you know what you are supposed to do, there are still some surprises along the way. But, when you watch someone actually do something, each step becomes clear and the surprise is only at the end when it all works out the way it is supposed to.

Plus, I have yet to see any professional quilter have a good solution for handling blocks that are different sizes. All of their blocks are the same size - or can easily be trimmed to be the same size.

But quilters like us sometimes end up with blocks that are different sizes - sometimes 1/2 inch to 1 inch different - even though we intended them to be the same. What then?

Choose a Quilt as You Go technique that will eliminate the frustration of how to trim your blocks to be the same size and finish your quilt or wall hanging so nobody will know you had that problem - and years from now, even you will forget!

Here is what one quilter had to say about our first Quilt as You Go DVD Set:

"Hi, Penny
I just wanted to thank you for this quilt-as-you-go instruction.  I am currently making my first quilt, and this is the method I'm using.  Our teacher showed how to join the blocks in class, but it was so quick, I had already forgotten by the time I got home.  Your video is so helpful, and has now given me the confidence I need to do it myself.  Thank you so much,
"
