If your house is anything like mine, there are t-shirts all over the place.
There are drawers jammed full of shirts, closets with stacks of shirts on the shelves, boxes and bags of t-shirts in the rafters of the garage, and even a basket of t-shirts decorating the bedroom - all just waiting for the perfect setting in a quilt.
For years, it seemed like every time we turned around someone in our family got another t-shirt. Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, school clubs, community events, places we visited - just endless.
Each one of these shirts holds a memory by itself.
In just one small stack, we have:
- "The Official TV Land Marching Band" shirt from 1998 when engineering son, Bubba, was in the Helix Highlanders Marching Band
- a red, white and blue "Ernie Ewin for City Council" t-shirt, from his winning election in 2006
- a "Dave Allan for Mayor" t-shirt with a picture of a firefighter on it from his losing election in 2006
- a baby blue "Jackson Hole" t-shirt with a deer standing under an antler archway from a trip my parents took
- a green "Christmas in April" shirt, from when my Rotary Club helped paint a house for an older couple
- a white shirt with a yellow, green and red dragon from Korea where my parents traveled
- a sweatshirt that says "Over Sixty your children start looking middle aged" - now that's scary, since I'm over 60, and my kids are in their late 20s (I'm sure they would be horrified!)
- a peacock blue shirt from Boy Scout Troop 319 that says "Walk in the day, not just through it" for Boy Scout hikes
- a white Girl Scout Cookie t-shirt with a fluffy tiger on it - need I say more? We sold thousands of boxes of Girl Scout cookies!
- and even a couple of "Ross Perot for President" t-shirts (now, those are winners!)

Well, you get the idea - hundreds of t-shirts and sweat shirts. All just waiting.
One day I got ambitious and cut the pictures and sayings out of some of my parents' travel t-shirts. I even cut out the other blank side of the shirt - just in case. Some of the shirts have printing on both sides, offering even more opportunities for inclusion in a quilt.
I keep looking at the stacks of shirts, wondering how I should put them together in a quilt.
I've spent some time scouring the internet and books in quilt shops, looking for something interesting to do with them, with no luck. Most of the quilt designs I found are just t-shirt rectangles with sashing - pretty boring in my eyes.
At first I thought I would just make a rag quilt - layer them, and then somehow stitch the blocks together. The problem is that they aren't all the same size.
I didn't just take my square ruler and hack them all into 12 inch squares. No. I carefully cut each one so the picture or saying was centered in the cut square. As a result, some of them are 12 inch squares and some are 8 inch squares, and others are some other weird size.
In addition to the size differences, there is a difference in the materials - some are t-shirts and some are light weight sweat shirts, with a few knit polo shirts thrown in for good measure.
And then there is that small issue of some of them have printing on both the front and back, while others have print just on one side. The question is whether I should match the front and back - printed or not - on the front and back of the quilt, or should I just put the printed portions on the front of the quilt?
And what about the back, anyway? Do you use t-shirt material, flannel, cotton, what?
All of these questions and no good answers, because I really would like to do something different. After all, we worked hard for those t-shirts, so they deserve to be displayed in a unique way.
After I cut several of them out, they hung on my design wall for months waiting for inspiration. Finally - discouraged and lacking a design, I took them down and put them back on a shelf in my closet.
Then a couple of years ago, I found a book about designing t-shirt quilts. Using that resource, I found t-shirt quilt instructions and made a quilt for my dad.
I was pretty happy with the way it turned out, and he was amazed. It included t-shirts from the colleges that my kids went to and some trips they had taken together. In between the t-shirts logos, I placed Eccentric Pinwheel blocks (traditional quilt blocks) that had photos in the center square patch of each block.
But I still have stacks and stacks of t-shirts that I know nobody will wear again. And they are taking up shelf space, let alone having to look at the basket full of t-shirts in my bedroom.
It's funny how topics seem to go in cycles. Recently, dozens of quilters have sent in questions about how to make t-shirt quilts.
